Profile

Young Master Romi is now better known as “Munna,” after his brilliant performance in K.A. Abbas’s picture in which he played the title role.

Eight -year old Romi, whose real name is Mohammed Salim, made his screen debut in Sohrab Modi’s “Jhansi Ki Rani” and later played important roles in “Shole,” “Footpath,” “Dil-e-Nadaan,” “Paapi” and “Toote Khilone”. His forthcoming films include a mythological, about which he says, “It takes me three hours to put on my make-up.”

He likes to study and loves to play cricket, but above all he wants to be an actor like Dilip Kumar. His favorite directors are Abbas and B.R. Chopra, and his favorite child star is his young friend, Rattan Kumar.

Those tears he sheds on the screen are real tears. “No glycerin for me,” says this little actor.

His proudest and happiest memory is his recent meeting with India’s Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, whom he met in Delhi at a special showing of “Munna”. (This interview was conducted in October 1954, contributed by Sudarshan Talwar).
